Commentary To Books Cracker!: The Best Dog in Vietnam

CRACKER IS ONE OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY'S MOST VALUABLE WEAPONS: a German shepherd trained to sniff out bombs, traps, and the enemy. The fate of entire platoons rests on her keen sense of smell. She's a Big Deal, and she likes it that way. Sometimes Cracker remembers when she was younger, and her previous owner would feed her hot dogs and let her sleep in his bed. That was nice, too. Rick Hanski is headed to Vietnam. There, he's going to whip the world and prove to his family and his sergeant -- and everyone else who didn't think he was cut out for war -- wrong. But sometimes Rick can't help but wonder that maybe everyone else is right. Maybe he should have just stayed at home and worked in his dad's hardware store. When Cracker is paired with Rick, she isn't so sure about this new owner. He's going to have to prove himself to her before she's going to prove herself to him. They need to be friends before they can be a team, and they have to be a team if they want to get home alive. Told in part through the uncanny point of view of a German shepherd, Cracker! is an action-packed glimpse into the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a dog and her handler. It's an utterly unique powerhouse of a book by the Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira.

Reviewed by Sally Kruger, aka "Readinngjunky" for TeensReadToo.comThis book tells the story of a Vietnam hero. It's not your usual run-of-the-mill war story because it's told from two points of view. A young soldier named Rick Hanski and a German shepherd he trained for the military share the spotlight as they recount their adventures from training camp to active duty in the jungles of Vietnam. Cracker and Rick are paired together in training to sniff out bombs, booby-traps, and enemy soldiers.

I got this book via the mystery date from the library where you get a wrapped book and dont know what it is until you check it out. Otherwise, I probably wouldnt have read this one. Im not a fan of war novels and Im not a giant lover of animals that talk to the reader and this is both. Also for those who hate omniscient point of view, this is also that, bouncing between Crackers thoughts and Rick (and Willie, her original owner). The beginning is rather sad, Willies family has hit a rough

This story is about a dog named Cracker. She is a german-shepard that is big and strong. She originally lived with Willy until Willy's dad lost his job and had to move into an apartment but the problem is is that the apartment doesn't allow dogs. So they send Cracker off to the military and her her dog handler is Rick. At first she was one of the worst dogs and hated Rick but eventually she learns to love and obey him. They train for sniffing out booby traps and other hazardous objects. When

I dragged my way through the beginning of this book, but then I couldnt stop reading the last 50 pages or so. I am not even a dog person, but I was incredibly moved by this story of Rick and Cracker in Vietnam.

In Cracker, even when things change rapidly you should adapt to whatever life throws at you. That is exactly what Rick and Cracker do throughout the book. The book starts in Chicago with a boy named Willie. Willie is a boy who loves his dog Cracker. They have been together ever since Willie was 6 months old. Cracker is an extremely smart Germain Shepard. Then they must move to an apartment because his father got laid off. The apartment does not allow dogs so, they are faced with 2 choices, send
