Crit Of Books Death and the Maiden
Dark but unflinching look at oppression, abuse and its social as well as personal consequences. Much better as a play than a film, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley notwithstanding.

A friendly stranger helps you with his car. You invite friendly stranger. Your wife recognises "friendly stranger" as the man who was involved her rape/torture. Who do you believe? The friendly stranger or the traumatic wife? Death and the Maiden refers to the quartet composed by Schubert with quick allusions in the play. It was a really short play, barely took a day to read. I really enjoyed the perception of truth and belief presented in the play. It was an enjoyable quick read, analysing it

Its such an interesting examination of the challenges of moving on from past injustice and what we ask people to get over just to keep the peace. Its a small cast, but theres a star turn opportunity with this sharp no-holds-barred script.

The ambiguous truth and intractable horror of Maiden are stomach-churning, for Dorfman offers neither audience nor reader any easy answers. And in the midst of it all, Paulina, as bold and unrelenting as a Fury, is a provocative, powerfully indelible character. Her fierce, eloquent monologues are the heart of the play.



Having read this a decade ago, and seen the movie countless times, I was compelled to revisit this story for a number of reasons, not the least of which was my idea that it would be a good text to use in a class I am teaching. I've since decided to use the film version instead, as I consider it a better execution of the tale and the themes (and because it is, in my mind, Polanski's best film since Chinatown). But that doesn't mean that this play isn't anything short of fantastic. Outside of one

Intense and difficult. Definitely don't recommend for sensitive listeners or even listeners who might be sensitive. Paulina uses crude, angry, specific language to talk about her experiences and it's genuinely hard to listen to. Still, it asks questions that need to be asked without giving easy answers, pointing out the cruelty of both the doctor then and Paulina now. You WANT Paulina to be justified, you want the narrative to justify her, and while it's true that the emotional truth IS that
